LIBR 204: Resumes: An Exercise in Modification

I have made my career at the Paso Robles City Library, where I have been working as a Librarian for the past 29 years. I have always wanted to get my Master’s degree, but life intervened until now. I like to say I am having a “flipped” career; instead of getting the education then working in the field, I worked in the field and now I am going back to get my education. For the first 26 years of my Paso Robles City Library career, I worked as the Adult Services Librarian. In our library, this translates to overseeing Circulation, Technical Services, Inter-Library Loan, adult and teen programming, Collection Development for grades six through senior citizens, management of the Senior Center Library, and supervision of part-time and volunteer staff. For the past three years, I have been the Interim Library Manager (in our city this translates to a Professional Manager II position). I have enjoyed the challenges of higher level decision making, scheduling, and an opportunity to work more closely with our Friends and Foundation Boards as well as our Library Board and, to a lesser extent, our City Council.

As our City slowly recovers from the economic downturn of the past few years, and we are able to backfill positions that have remained vacant due to a hiring freeze (part of our city’s layoff prevention program), one of which is the position of City Librarian (a Professional Manager III position). This job requires a Master’s degree (unlike our other Librarian positons which fall under the umbrella of “Coordinator” and require a Bachelor’s Degree), and now that my son is away at college, I am able to pursue my own education, allowing me to apply for it when it opens up. I believe that the current experience I am having working as the Library Manager combined with my long history working for the city make me a qualified candidate for the position. The differences between the Professional Manager II and III have mainly to do with degree of supervision and greater input on policy making, so my resume revision for applying for this job will focus on areas where I have acted independently successfully and my work with the Library Board’s policy revisions.

If I am not selected to be the City Librarian (I never count on being guaranteed a position), I would still like to stay living in the Central Coast area. Because of the way in which our retirement package works, it would be better for me to retire from the City at my current salary than to return to my Adult Services Librarian pay, so I would consider taking early retirement, and find another job that won’t jeopardize my retirement package. When I look at what library positions exist in our area, the most likely candidate is to be an instructor for the Cuesta College Library Technician’s program. I discussed the requirements for this job with the head of their library, and I feel confident that I could do a good job teaching a number of the classes they offer. Being a graduate of this program myself (although it was prior to the online program it is today), I am familiar with the type of skills tech graduates need to learn for success on the job. Having been a guest lecturer for one of the online classes on two occasions, I am familiar with the online program Cuesta uses, so hopefully my learning curve would be shorter than others’. This job could even be a stepping stone to teaching in a Master’s program such as this one from San Jose State, helping others to achieve their career goals as I am achieving mine. In applying for this position, I would emphasize opportunities I have had to teach others, including curriculum design, and my familiarity with using technology.

Although these two jobs are somewhat diverse, I am confident that I would be a good candidate for either of them. My years of library experience and recent managerial knowledge would be assets in either of these positions.
